Mental Health and Wellness Cell: Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, Sri Anandpur Sahib
The college years are a period of immense growth, exploration, and transition, often accompanied by significant academic and personal stress. Recognizing the critical importance of nurturing not just the intellectual, but also the emotional and psychological well-being of its students and staff, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, Sri Anandpur Sahib, proudly establishes its Mental Health and Wellness Cell (MHWC).
This initiative is guided by the college's commitment to holistic education, rooted in the values of compassion and community service. Our cell is a confidential, non-judgmental space dedicated to fostering a resilient and supportive campus culture. We aim to destigmatize mental health challenges and ensure that every member of the college community has access to the resources needed to navigate distress and thrive academically and personally. The MHWC stands as a pillar of support, ensuring that a healthy mind remains the foundation for all achievements at SGTB Khalsa College.
Functioning of the Mental Health and Wellness Cell (MHWC)
The Mental Health and Wellness Cell employs a three-pronged approach—Preventive, Curative, and Promotive—to address the diverse needs of the college community.
1. Individual and Group Counselling (Curative)
* Confidential Support: Provide one-on-one, private counselling sessions with a trained professional to address issues such as anxiety, stress, depression, relationship difficulties, and academic pressure.
* Referral Services: Connect students with external specialists (psychiatrists, clinical psychologists) for advanced diagnosis and treatment when required.
* Crisis Intervention: Offer immediate support and assistance for students experiencing acute emotional or psychological distress.
2. Awareness and Education Workshops (Preventive & Promotive)
* Mental Health Literacy: Conduct regular workshops and seminars to educate students and faculty on understanding and managing stress, building resilience, identifying signs of mental illness, and practicing self-care.
* Skill Development: Organize sessions focused on critical life skills, including time management, effective communication, emotional regulation, and mindfulness.
* Stigma Reduction Campaigns: Run campus-wide initiatives and campaigns to normalize conversations around mental health and actively reduce associated societal stigma.
3. Promoting a Culture of Wellness (Promotive)
* Peer Support Network: Train a select group of students to act as Mental Health First-Responders, providing basic emotional support and guiding their peers to professional help.
* Wellness Activities: Organize events promoting physical and mental balance, such as yoga and meditation sessions, creative arts therapy, and dedicated relaxation spaces.
* Faculty Sensitization: Conduct training for faculty and administrative staff to help them recognize student distress and respond empathetically, ensuring a supportive environment across all departments.
